Simon Bassey wants to see Barnet react to Notts County defeat

Barnet manager Simon Bassey has said there were no positives to take from the weekend’s 4-1 defeat to Notts County and that he wants to see his team competing with those at the top of the table, not the ones at the bottom.

County moved themselves back into the National League play-off places with a commanding 4-1 win over the Bees in which Bassey claims his players threw the game away shortly before half time.

The scoring did not begin until the last knockings of the first half, when the home defence were unable to get a last-gasp corner clear and invited defender Mark Ellis to nick the lead.

A second followed within a minute of the restart, with Ruben Rodrigues on hand with a neat finish and creator Calvin Miller also involved in Ben Richards-Everton’s own goal.

Substitutes Enzio Boldewijn and Michael Petrasso traded goals in the closing minutes but Ian Burchnall’s men had already done enough to nip past Bromley in seventh.

Asked if there were any positives to take from the match, Bassey told the Barnet website at full time: “No. Not really. It is what it is, we’ve got to dust ourselves down and go again, we’re low on numbers and we’ve got to refresh them the best we can, and prepare for Eastleigh now. I hope there’ll be a reaction from that today.

“This is stuff that’s happening far too often and you work on it, but you know people need to help by doing their jobs and we never done that today.

“We gave ourself a mountain to climb and then with a second goal a minute after half time is suicide.”

Ahead of three tricky ties, Bassey added: “I don’t want to be a bottom of the league manager. I didn’t come here to be third bottom in the conference and have an open top bus, and I want to get out this league this club wants to get this league. Now we have to do it together.

“It’ll be a good test to see if these players can play at a level required. Today we never. We’ve got outrun, outfought, outpassed, everything – nobody could say anything different.

“Now we’ve got Eastleigh, we’ve got Torquay, we’ve got Sutton. How good are we?

“We can’t just be saying well done, we did well against Weymouth. That’s not what we’re here for. I certainly know that’s not what I’m not here for.”
