But north London neighbours Wealdstone picked up a last-gasp 3-2 win over Rochdale at Grosvenor Vale.
Barnet’s Dom Revan had an early header cleared, after a good run and cross from Idris Kanu, before Danny Collinge cut out a dangerous Chesterfield cross at the other end.
Bees were denied by a goalline clearance on the quarter-hour mark, with Collinge heading over from Zak Brunt’s corner on 18 minutes.
But Tom Naylor headed wide for the hosts, before failing to trouble Laurie Walker with a shot from the edge of the box.
Another Naylor effort flew wide of the target on the half-hour mark, before Callum Stead hit the crossbar for Barnet and Harry Pritchard was denied by a goalline block.
Barnet’s Adebola Oluwo then headed just over from a corner, before the Spireites sent a late free-kick over the crossbar.
The second half was four minutes old when the home side broke the deadlock through Armando Dobra. And it was 2-0 on the hour mark when Will Grigg beat Walker.
Brunt was booked midway through the second half, with Walker producing a diving save to deny the home side a third on 73 minutes, then using his feet to keep out another effort moments later.
Chesterfield got their third on 76 minutes, though, as Michael Jacobs got his name on the scoresheet. And it was 4-0 four minutes from time when Joe Quigley beat Walker.
Gary Hooper bagged an injury-time brace for Bees, but it was little consolation for Dean Brennan’s men.
Wealdstone, buoyed by news of plans for a new stadium on an 18-acre site and with a crowd of 1470 in attendance at Grosvenor Vale, saw Alex Dyer head over from the first chance of their game against Rochdale on three minutes.
But the visitors took the lead on 10 minutes as Kairo Mitchell netted, before Kyle Smith curled over from range.
Max Kretzschmar was shown the first yellow card of the game, before just missing a cross into the box.
