In 2022, a total of 7,784 catalytic converter thefts were recorded in London – with an overall figure of 43,702 thefts recorded between 2019 and 2022.
According to the Metropolitan Police, catalytic converters contain precious metals that have a high scrap value and are often shipped abroad to be used.

These devices are normally worth up to £600, with thefts “increasing” according to the Met.
Data obtained from Sky News shows almost 100,000 catalytic converter thefts have been recorded across the UK in the past three years.
Here is how many recorded thefts there were in eight north London boroughs:
Barnet
Barnet was the worst affected borough in London, with 465 recorded thefts for 2022.
A further 1,037 thefts were recorded in 2021, 1,115 thefts in 2020 and 820 in 2019.
Harrow
Harrow ranked third, with 413 thefts recorded in 2022.
A further 703 thefts were recorded in 2021, 688 in 2020 and 233 in 2019.
Enfield
Enfield came in sixth, with 345 recorded thefts in 2022.
A further 645 thefts were recorded in 2021, a peak of 883 in 2020 and 494 in 2019.
Brent
Brent ranked 14th, with 252 recorded thefts in 2022.
A further 541 thefts were recorded in 2021, 649 in 2020 and 528 in 2019.
Haringey
Haringey came in 17th, with 237 recorded thefts in 2022.
A further 343 thefts were recorded in 2021, 444 in 2020 and 409 in 2019.
Hackney
Hackney was in 23rd place, with 178 recorded thefts in 2022.
A further 130 thefts were recorded in 2021, 226 in 2020 and 200 in 2019.
Islington
And Islington ranked 24th with 172 recorded thefts in 2022.
A further 142 thefts were recorded in 2021, 172 in 2020 and 244 in 2019.
Camden
Camden came out as the north London borough with the fewest recorded catalytic converter thefts in 2022 – 26th in London.
