Major traffic delays in Hendon after water pipe bursts on A41

A water company is hopeful residents will see a normal return of their water supply this evening after taps in some homes ran dry when a pipe burst. 

Properties across north west London suffered from either no water or low pressure levels after the burst on the A41 in Hendon this morning (December 14).

It was the second major burst in just a matter of days after a similar incident further up the A41 near Mill Hill over the weekend.

Thames Water says it became aware of the latest issue this morning after the A41 Hendon Way started flooding.

Engineers attended the scene and police closed the road causing huge traffic disruption in the Hendon area throughout the day.

The road remains closed this evening and lane closures could last into next week.

However, thankfully for residents, Thames Water says it has been able to build up water pressure across its network, and as of 7pm, said a “significant” number of households had seen water return to their taps.

The supplier added pressure should return to normal for all customers by 9pm (December 14) by warned there may be some dips.

NW1, NW2, NW4, NW7 and NW11 postcodes were reportedly affected and Thames Water apologised for the inconvenience caused.

A bottled water station, which has been hugely popular, will remain open at Barnet Copthall Leisure Centre in Champions Way,, Mill Hill, (NW4 1PX) until 9pm and is set to open again as a precaution at 8.30am tomorrow.

Although water supplies are said to be returning to normal, traffic disruption is likely to continue.

The A41 remains closed southbound at Hendon Central station with engineers having to dig five metres below ground.

When the road is able to reopen, it is likely to be only partially for a few days.
