The fire in Northway Crescent was reported to London Fire Brigade (LFB) at 4.52pm yesterday (June 5), as large plumes of smoke in the area prompted 50 emergency calls from residents.
A LFB spokesperson said that the blaze was “very visible” causing heavy traffic on nearby busy roads, including A1, A41 and M1.
They added that fire crews were tasked with tackling the flames across “a range of garages and gardens”.
It took firefighters almost four hours to extinguish the blaze, with LFB announcing that the incident was over at 8.48pm.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the Brigade confirmed that its crews had to “cool gas cylinders” at the scene.
While fire crews tackled the blaze, people were advised to avoid the area and residents to keep their windows and doors closed.
One Twitter user posted pictures of the “huge plumes of smoke” that were visible from Edgware.
Ten fire engines and 70 firefighters from Mill Hill, Hendon, Stanmore and surrounding stations attended the scene.
Firefighters from Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service also helped to tackle the blaze.
