Several hundred migrants, including many Iraqi Kurds, banded together in an attempt to cross the border from Belarus into Poland on November 8, 2021. Images widely circulated online show the group approaching the border. Though Belarus has actively been pushing migrants towards the European Union since this summer, our team found that many of these migrants were encouraged to band together and take the dangerous route across the border by posts on Kurdish-language Facebook pages.
Videos showing hundreds of migrants on the road leading to the Kuznica-Bruzgi border post were widely circulated on Facebook, Twitter and Telegram on November 8, 2021.
This video was posted on the Facebook page Halgord Omar Presse on November 8, 2021.
Since August 2021, small groups of migrants have managed to cross the border from Belarus into Poland and Lithuania on a daily basis. This is the first time, however, that such a large group has tried to cross the border all at once.

The European Union (EU) imposed sanctions on the government of Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko after contested elections in August 2020 and the violent repression of the ensuing protests. The EU has accused Belarus of instrumentalising this flux of migrants in response to these sanctions.
