Boris Johnson is facing a series of accusations about breaking COVID rules – the latest being that he was at a “bring your own booze” party in Downing Street during the first lockdown.
The alleged party on 20 May 2020 is one of several lockdown-breaking gatherings which are said to have taken place across government during the pandemic.
Facing questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday over the latest outcry that he attended a drinks event at Number 10 – with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer calling for his resignation and a senior Tory describing the gathering as “indefensible” – the PM apologised after admitting he was there.
Mr Johnson acknowledged the public “rage” over the incident but insisted he thought it could have been technically within the rules, telling MPs that he attended the gathering for around 25 minutes to “thank groups of staff”.
“I believed implicitly that this was a work event,” he said.

On 15 May 2020, Boris Johnson, his wife Carrie, former chief adviser Dominic Cummings, and Mr Johnson’s key aide Martin Reynolds were pictured sitting in the Number 10 garden.
