HOUSTON — Charlie Morton exited in the third inning of World Series Game 1 on Tuesday night with an apparent ankle injury, forcing the Atlanta Braves to tap into their bullpen much sooner than they would have liked.
Morton, pitching with a 5-0 lead with one out in the bottom of the third inning, delivered a pitch to Houston Astros left fielder Michael Brantley, then limped off the field after being checked on by a Braves athletic trainer.
In the previous inning, the 37-year-old Morton was hit in the right ankle by a 102.4 mph one-hopper off the bat of Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel.
His exit prompted Braves manager Brian Snitker to go with left-handed reliever A.J. Minter, who hasn’t recorded more than six outs this season.
