Police Scotland investigating report of ‘irregularities’ in Alba Party

Police Scotland is investigating “irregularities” in the finances of the Alba Party.

The force said a complaint was lodged by the pro-independence party on 26 May, exactly two months after Kenny MacAskill won its leadership contest in light of Alex Salmond’s death.

The party said a review of its operations and finances was instigated by the former first minister while he was still alive as he had “concerns with the management of the party”.

An Alba Party spokesperson added: “This review was undertaken with the full support of the Alba Party NEC.

“Subsequently a number of internal financial and administrative irregularities have come to light.

“In line with our legal and fiduciary duties these concerns have now been passed to the relevant authorities.

“The party formally reported its concerns to Police Scotland. As there is now a live police investigation we are unable to comment further at this time.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On 26 May 2025, we received a complaint from the Alba Party in relation to irregularities within their finances.

“The investigation into this matter is ongoing.”

The Alba Party was founded in 2021 and was led by Mr Salmond until his death in 2024.

On 26 March, Mr MacAskill was elected the new leader of the party and vowed to deliver his predecessor’s “dream of independence” for Scotland.

The former MP and MSP saw off competition from rival candidate MSP Ash Regan.

Earlier this month, Ms Regan quit as the party’s sole MSP and is now sitting as an independent for the Edinburgh Eastern constituency.
